Wearing - Hip Carry
Hip carry is used beginning around 6 months, as soon as the baby can sit up unassisted. Be sure to watch our video on using the hip carry.
- Put the sling on with rings in corsage position. See
this video and this video.
- Adjust the main body of the sling to the right height - usually at the top of your hip for hip position. See video.
- Spread the fabric around the rings and loosen the outside edge. When the fabric is spread around the rings, it should look like this. See video.
- Leave the top rail of sling - the edge away from your body - loose until baby is in sling.
- Hold baby on shoulder opposite rings in burp position, as shown at right.
- Reaching through the bottom of the sling with your free hand, pull baby’s feet through sling.
- Slide the baby onto your hip with one hand as you hold the sling in place with the other hand. Your
hands will pull in opposite directions.
- As you settle the baby into the sling, bend baby’s legs like a frog on either side of your hip, with bottom lower than knees.
- CHECK to be sure fabric is spread from baby's neck to knees. See video.
- On a toddler (pictured), fabric can start at upper back.
- Once baby is in position, tighten slack in the top rail (the edge away from your body) by pulling
up and over across the body. See this video and this video.
- Pull shoulder folds out to cup your shoulder. See video.
- Babies and toddlers who can sit up unassisted can breastfeed in the hip carry. Simply loosen sling to lower baby
enough to latch on. See video.
- For more information on the hip carry, watch this video.
- To take baby out, loosen the top rail. Loosening the entire sling is not necessary. See video.
- It may help to lift the baby's weight slightly with one hand while loosening the sling with the other hand.
- Reach inside the sling and lift baby under the arms.
- Lift baby straight up onto your shoulder in burp position.
- If you lift UP, not out, you will not need to loosen the sling much to get the baby out. See video about lifting up, not out.
Older toddlers who are quite long might be easier to take out the bottom of the sling. Only do this with a toddler who is walking steadily. Get down on one knee so toddler's feet are touching the ground. Let toddler out the bottom of the sling, onto her feet. See video
- Pull the fabric off the baby with one hand as you hold baby with the other hand.
